FUNERALS

 

Catholic or Protestant Funerals

    Description of classical funeral in Paris and surroundings.

    When the funeral procession arrives at the church members of the family are invited to take seat in the first row

    In front of the altar by the masters of ceremonies. The guests and friends will be placed in the opposite row.
    The priest or the minister comes in front of the coffin and will give order to the master of ceremonie to bring in the coffin in the choir.
    The audience and the family will stand up and wait for the setting of the coffin before sitting.
    Flowers will be arranged on the coffin.
    The staff will then leave the choir and the ceremony will take place.

    For the catholics, the family will bless the coffin with a sprinkler at the end of the ceremony and will go back to their seats if they do not receive condolences.

    The audience will be invited by the master of ceremonies to bless the coffin and will go to the back of the church and sign the autograph book, so the family will be able to thank those present.

    If the family wishes to receive condolences, they will stand in one side of the entrance, and will shake hands with each guest.
    Then all the people walk out of the church (or the temple) to take leave of the funeral.

    When the cemetery is close to the church, people walk behind the hearse to the burial place,where the coffin will be placed, flowers will be arranged all arround the grave.
    In the protestant funeral, the family and the guests are invited to throw a hand full earth on the coffin.
    The master of the ceremony will request the family to come near to the grave and each will cross oneself or just bow head.

    The guests will do the same and every one will set off.
    A flower may also be given to each person who wishes to throw it in the grave.
    Presence of a master of ceremony is absolutely necessary.







    CIVIL FUNERAL




    The funeral cortege takes place either at the home, either at the hospital walking or by car, it depends on the distance to the cemetary, and the wish of the family.

    As soon as the hearse arrives at the cemetary, guests take place behind the family and they will walk to the grave.

    The coffin will be exhibited or directly burried.
    The master of ceremonie will ask the member of the family to come near the grave and they will bow head or put a flower or throw a hand full of earth on the coffin.

    The family receive condolences or a table with an autograph book may be at disposal .

    In case of the presence of personality and numerous guests , someone may make a speach in memory of the deceased, the master of ceremonie must be aware if the audience will be important.






JEWISH FUNERAL

    In France the coffin is obligatory. Guest will join together at the gate of the cemetery.

    The coffin will be exhibited on a bier in the alley of the cemetery where the rabbin will say prayers

    After which, the coffin will be brought to the sepulture and be buried.

    Family and guests will each throw a hand full of earth .

    The family may receive condolences, a table for autograph books may be at disposal of audience.

    Sending flowers is not a usual custom.

    The master of the ceremony will supervise each detail of the ceremony with the Rabbin.

  • MOSLEM FUNERAL
  • In France the coffin is obligatory. Guests will join together at the gate of the cemetery.

    Iman will say prayers during the Funerals. Earth will be trown in the burial place which will immediately be closed up. The master of ceremony will supervise each detail with the Iman.

    BUDDHIST FUNERAL

      The deceased’s family will get in touch with a Bonze who will propose a burial day according to the birthday and the day of the death of the deceased.

      The bonze will go to the reposing room where the family and friends are assembled together to say prayers and give the blessing to the dead. They will go to the cemetery where again he will say prayers and give blessing;

      The deceased’s family will make a gift to the Bonze and offer a light meal to all the guests on site.

      Guests in their turn will give family presents.
      .

    CREMATION

      Coffin as well as casket are obligatory (except in case of ashes dispersing there is no need of a casket).

      A priest may come before the cremation to give blessing.

      The duration of a cremation depends on the crematorium equipement. In Paris it may last 2 hours.

      Ashes may be put in a casket and put in the family’s sepulture, or in a Colombarium . Ashes may also be spread over in the sea

    TRANSPORT OF CORPSE before being put in a coffin

      It must be executed in hearses equipped with special approved chest, in a 24 hours time delay after the death (without sanitary treatment), and 48 hours delay (with sanitary treatment).

      The corpse is placed in a protecting bag with an identity bracelet for transport out of the district and in a the
      presence of a Police officer.


    TRANSPORT OF CORPSE after being put in a coffin

      It must be made in a hearse fitted out with particular chest.
      No one anymore is allowed to make themselves this kind of transport.

    COFFIN

      The wood must be 18mm thick for funerals not exceeding 2 hours duration. The delay allowed is extended to
      4 hours if the corpse has received an hygienic treatment.
      Coffin must be 22mm thick for funerals exceeding 2 hours and if the corpse has not received hygienic treatment.
      Corpse deposited in temporary burial vault beyond 6 days delay, needs to be put in a coffin lined with zinc and
      Equipped with an air filter.
      Coffin for cremation are entirely equipped with inflamable parts.

    CASKET

      They are provided with an ash-pan and may be in wood, metal, bronze, granite…..
      They must be provided with an identification plate of the deceased.
